Die Stadt Leipzig hat im Laufe ihrer Geschichte eine Vielzahl an großen Persönlichkeiten hervorgebracht. Doch eine scheint in der vielfältigen Erinnerungskultur Leipzigs komplett vergessen zu sein, dabei war vsie die erste Berufsfotografin Deutschlands, die sogar Millard Fillmore, den 13. Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten, fotografierte. Die Rede ist von Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann (1815–1901). Ein Theaterstück samt Ausstellung widmet sich jetzt dieser faszinierenden Persönlichkeit. Grund genug, bei der Regisseurin Patricia Hoffmann nachzufragen
Hallo, Patricia, können Sie uns bitte kurz etwas über sich erzählen.
Gerne. Mein Name ist Patricia Hoffmann, ich wohne seit 13 Jahren in Leipzig, zuvor lebte ich im Rahmen meiner tänzerischen Ausbildung zehn Jahre in Berlin. Aufgewachsen bin ich in Erfurt. Einen Großteil meiner beruflichen Zeit verbringe ich im TV- und Showbereich als Regisseurin, Choreografin und Autorin. Seit neun Jahren inszeniere ich außerdem Theaterstücke und Musicals auf verschiedenen Bühnen in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Niedersachsen und der Schweiz. „Die Fotografin“ wird das insgesamt vierte von mir konzipierte Bühnenstück werden.
Was versteckt sich hinter dem Projekt „Die Fotografin“?
Das ist eine wundervoll allgemeinkonkrete Frage – da muss ich mich erst einmal ordnen. Eines ist es auf jeden Fall – mein bisher größtes Herzensprojekt. Das liegt vor allem auch daran, dass ich zum ersten Mal ein Theaterstück komplett allein produziere. „Die Fotografin“ ist … … ein historisch fundiertes, aber eben auch fiktives, fantasievolles Theaterstück, dass sich dem Leben von Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann widmet und diese unglaubliche Geschichte einer noch unglaublicheren Frau in den aktuellen Kontext setzt. Wir werden an den vier Abenden ein bisschen über die Anfänge der Fotografie lernen, wir schauen uns in der aktuellen Leipziger Immobilienszene um und wir werden vor allem über die Rolle der Frau nachdenken – damals und heute. Alles ohne zu agitieren und mit einem Augenzwinkern. Und wie klassische Stoffe es verlangen, ist auch ein bisschen Liebe und Drama dabei.
Wie sind Sie denn auf Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann gekommen? Wo liegt die Faszination?
Am Poniatowskiplan in der Elsterstraße steht eine wunderschöne Villa, die von Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann erbaut wurde. Am Tor dieser Villa hängt eine Erinnerungstafel an Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann. Diese Tafel war zu Corona-Zeiten fast zugewuchert von Efeu, trotzdem haben wir sie beim Hundespaziergang entdeckt. Am gleichen Tag habe ich diese Frau gegoogelt und festgestellt, was für eine unfassbar bewegte Biografie diese große Leipziger Persönlichkeit hatte. Ich habe dann festgestellt, dass diese Frau in ihrer Stadt und in den Köpfen ihrer Bürger irgendwie gar nicht präsent ist.
Und das …
… obwohl sie als erste Berufsfotografin Europas, als verwitwete Frau Mitte des 19 Jahrhunderts nach New York reiste. Und zwar als Dame der Leipziger Gesellschaft, die Clara Schumann, Karl Heine, Johannes Brahms oder Bürgermeister Tröndlin porträtierte. Ich finde, dass diese spannende Frau sichtbar gemacht werden muss.
Sie waren sogar extra in New York!
Als ich recherchiert hatte, dass Bertha sogar den 13. Präsidenten der USA, Millard Fillmore, fotografiert hatte und ca. 1849 unter großen Aufwendungen nach Amerika reiste – vermutlich auf einem Dampfsegler ab Bremerhaven – war mir klar, dass jetzt die Geschichte noch ein bisschen größer werden würde. Als deutsche Frau in New York, zu dieser Zeit, in einer Männerdomäne – diesen Spuren musste ich folgen. Es gibt Aufzeichnungen, die die exakte Adresse verraten. Broadway 387 und ihr zweites Atelier in der White Street 62. Beide Adressen sind nur wenige Meter voneinander entfernt.
Was haben sie vorgefunden?
Beide Originalhäuser stehen nicht mehr, laut Aufzeichnungen der Städtebauplanung New York wurden die Blöcke im Lower Manhatten nach Berthas Abreise 1851 umgestaltet. Das Haus am Broadway ist aktuell eine große Baustelle, die Fassade ist leider komplett verkleidet. Die White Street 62 allerdings ist auch heute Heimat für Künstler – dort entstand in den letzten Jahren ein multidisziplinärer Kunstraum. Bertha hätte es gefallen.
Was kann der Feminismus heutiger Prägung von Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann lernen?
Gelassenheit, Ehrgeiz, sich auf sich selbst verlassen und sich selbst vertrauen. Freunde und aufrichtige Wegbegleiter und Wegbegleiterinnen sind wichtig – egal, ob Frau, divers oder Mann.
Wie kann man sich das Stück vorstellen?
Alles kann ich nicht verraten. Nur so viel: Wir befinden uns im Hier und Jetzt, wir begleiten eine Frau namens Louise bei ihrem Job als Immobilienmaklerin und irgendwie wird sie die Wohnungen in dieser Villa in der Elsterstraße nicht los. Der Grund dafür ist Bertha Wehnert- Beckmann, deren Geist keine Ruhe findet. Es kommt zum Zusammentreffen dieser beiden Frauen, die mehr verbindet, als zunächst angenommen.
Das Ensemble ist …
… wunderbar heterogen und besteht aus zwei Studierenden der renommierten Folkwang Uni in Essen und drei erfahrenen Schauspielerinnen. Wir spielen vier Vorstellungen im Schmuckpark der Südbrause. Es wird keine festen Eintrittspreise geben. Jeder ist willkommen und zahlt, was er, sie will. Um das Ganze zu ko- ordinieren, kann man bei uns per Mail die Sitzplätze reservieren.
Es gibt auch eine Ausstellung.
Das Stück wird von einer Ausstellung umrahmt, die ausgewählte Fotografien von Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann zeigt. Dabei hilft uns das Stadtgeschichtliche Museum, auf dessen umfangreiches Archiv wir zugreifen dürfen und in dem sich über 3.500 Fotoarbeiten Berthas befinden.
